why does this look so fake?

https://lemmy.world/post/45466207

Its the HDR so in a sense it is fake due to the post processing but I don’t think its generated
Something’s not right though - as someone else posted below, the suit is wrong, the Artemis suits don’t have a zip down the front
Just checked the official NASA pics of the recovery - no zippers and different patch placement. This is AI.
No, this so obviously AI generated with all of the telltale signs. I’ll give it credit for 5 fingered hands but every other detail is absurd.
you should totally crosspost this to /c/conspiracy, you’ll get much more entertaining responses.
I’m still waiting for cool theories to pop up. It has been awfully quiet around this moon mission.
I don’t know if it happened on any of the other feeds, but we were watching the liftoff on ABC’s YouTube channel and they had the initial MTV camera for the engine blast. Once it got toasted by the engines going by, they cut to an outside shot where the rocket was still on the launchpad with no movement and no smoke or flames. I immediately thought “Oh fuck, the conspiracy nuts are gonna eat THAT up.”
It do look like a painting, heh.

It doesn’t look fake to me, but if you want a way in which it might look different from similar images…

Cameras have changed over time. Like, I can’t list all the technical changes, but I can tell, when I look at an image, whether it looks like a photo that was taken in the 1970s or so.

lemmy.today/…/4a41b101-86c7-4102-b7b0-8ca9d3d7a0c…

I think that saturation on some things might be higher, gamma lower, film grain is present, might be depth-of-field differences, dunno. I’m sure that someone expert in photography could do a better job than me in listing technical differences.

Widespread use of image-editing software to do things like normalize images and change gamma to keep things from looking washed-out may be part of that (and cell phones, that do their own post-processing — redeye reduction, sharpening, etc may also be a factor).

The last time we had photos of people being hauled out of those capsules after coming back from Moon missions, those were the cameras in use:

lemmy.today/…/93cf055a-31ca-4744-9734-482da219103…

And so that might look “normal” and present-day cameras might not look “normal”.

I know that I get a bit of a shock, feels weird, when I see things like re-enacted American Civil War or World War 2 scenes shot with modern cameras, because most of the images I see of that, the photographs, are black-and-white and suddenly the world of color has collided with it.

There’s a lot of noise but it’s still “clean”. Like the cables at the top, the rust, the splashing, the guys in the back on the left. It’s the kind of shit AI models do to fake being real.
Norman Rockwell is alive and living on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific Ocean.
I suspect for those to whom this looks fake, it has to do with the scale of the person in the hatch compared to the capsule, and the combination of his generic pose, waving, the smile, and that he’s looking off-camera, instead of at the person in front of him.

The capsule looks much larger here

Any idea why is he wearing a different suit in the op photo versus the one above?
Because the op photo is AI

Not mine, but found it quite fun

Oversharpening
It looks fake because he’s back on Earth, yet he’s smiling.
Because it is. Here are official NASA photos, notice how their badges are placed differently: https://www.nasa.gov/gallery/artemis-ii-splashdown-and-return/
Artemis II Splashdown and Return - NASA

NASA's Orion spacecraft carried Artemis II Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, and Mission Specialist Christina Koch from NASA, along with Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen from the CSA (Canadian Space Agency), and splashed down in the Pacific Ocean near San Diego, California, at 5:07 p.m. PDT, (8:07 p.m. EDT) on Friday, April 10, 2026. The Artemis II test flight launched on Wednesday, April 1, from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida to begin its 10-day journey around the Moon for scientific discovery, economic benefits, and to build on our foundation for the first crewed missions to Mars. NASA’s Landing and Recovery team and the U.S. military coordinated efforts to extract the Artemis II crew from the Orion spacecraft.

And there‘s s zipper in the front?
Plus that looks more like an Apollo capsule, there is no door on the hatch and no float. One wave and the whole thing sinks. But they did get the number of fingers right.
Not only are they in different places the patches in OP’s picture aren’t clear The AI didn’t know what to put there so it just made something up that looks like it might belong as long as you don’t actually look at it.

Well of course it’s faked. Wouldn’t want the public to see the truth about what came back to Earth.

Because it’s fake. Look at the nonsense patches on his flight suit
With this new trend of journalists using AI to conduct polls without consulting any real people, are we about to enter an age where journalists have AI simply generate an image of the event they’re reporting on so they can save $ on photography?

Because it is an AI generated fake.

  • malformed and incorrect patches on the uniform
  • the front of the suit is slightly unzipped but the zipper pull is completely missing
  • the real suit does not zip up in the front at all
  • the straps around his shoulders and below his arms feature Schrodinger’s buckles that aren’t actually buckles if you look closesly
  • the capsule is absolutely miniscule and fake, with incorrect and fake details all over it
  • lol @ the gear tied down on the top of the capsule like its an SUV or a boat 😂 that really entertained me
It’s fake but a pretty damn good one.

Not shopped - AI slop.

FFS, who needs to make AI slop of news images? Clearly this is slop - the patches aren’t right, no zipper as @[email protected] mentioned, there’s no inflated ring at the water line…but WTF ghoulish slop bot is making these?

I have some theories.

I noticed on YouTube, mainly shorts, look like Ai. I noticed first from always sunny in Philadelphia clips because I know the original show didn’t look like that. And then I notice many other videos… Like the majority of the shorts.

My first thought was that “they” are trying to normalize Ai. This was within the past few months and, I don’t think I notice it as much more. So maybe they did do this and then backed away from the idea.

My second thought was that it’s some type of compression… But even that it stupid because it arguably looks worse any older compression.

I can’t think of reason for them to do this.
