@oxyhyxo and the heaps of trouble that followed when I poked randomly at expensive things in the house to see how they worked when I was a kid. I did however learn that the TV test partern that was broadcast had an actual use. My father also had less use for a dipole on the roof than me but I did manage to listen to VOA and BBC hf Transmissions on a crystal radio in Johannesburg.
