Another wander back to 2012 and the SIPEXII expedition. At the last sampling site (unplanned, we were stuck) - we had a visit from a Minke whale!

It decided to expand a hole that a seal made the day before - in ice about 10cm thick and not quite solidly frozen - for some room to breathe. The whale hung around for quite a while, returning to this spot to grab air.

It was .. very spectacular.

@adamsteer incredible!
@michcampbell it was!! That was such a wild site. Seals, emperors, whales...
@adamsteer so beautiful 😍 i still have vague hopes of getting down there for work one day...

@michcampbell I'd love to be able to connect you in - unfortunately, well, you know. AAD /universities etc have long decided they prefer to have someone else hold all this experience, or not hold it at all.

I guess, start schmoozing... πŸ˜¬πŸ˜‚πŸ˜

@adamsteer yeah, I had a few unsuccessful applications with the BOM a few yrs ago.

Having now done a couple of not-even-that-high-latitude winters now, it's probably a good thing I didn't get a position. I think Antarctic winter would kill me!

@michcampbell who knows what drives BoM hring decisions. I'm at a 100% rejection rate there (well, at all the agencies).

From experience, it's probably perceptually warmer on an Antarctic station over winter than in your average aussie glorified tent πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
