I mean, they could. But Dems largely aren’t leftists, so it’s not surprising or even necessarily counter-productive (since many of them are active supporters of capitalism) when they’re shitty to leftists.
Would love to see a Democratic Party that is actually dominated by leftists, though. Certainly we’ve made progress from where the Dems were in the 90s and 2000s.
Yeah, that's why I specified dems as a separate group. I can't tell if it is any better than the early 2000's. I was watching then, but I didn't understand that I was a leftist, and I didn't understand they hated us, so it's hard to look back and compare.
Bernie did a lot to push forward leftism into the US mainstream when he ran for the Dem nomination in 2016. We are immensely indebted to him.
Dems are still immensely shitty. But it’s not nearly as bad as it used to be, when Blue Dogs, neolibs, and moderates were the only real games in town after the 80s massacred the New Deal coalition.

I remember it well because in no small part Bernie pushed me further to the left, whereas before he was on the scene I would only have identified myself as a progressive Dem and not explicitly anti-capitalist!
He definitely helped me too. I had worked with the local occupy and that opened my eyes the first time.
