Today's copy of the Defensor Chieftain broke news "Green Data" wants to build an AI datacenter up on the high country just behind #Socorro #NewMexico. https://www.dchieftain.com/news/data-center-company-proposes-large-scale-project-in-socorro/3017863

Any bets on if they want to grab as much water from the desert as Agustin Plains Ranch LLC tried?

AI datacenters can't be green, let alone supergreen, no matter how much vegetative land they shade with solar panels. AI datacenters of any size are super red, always.
Issue, not copy. My first reaction to the headline was taking a gut punch.

Every issue since, through June 11, published at least one article each, all but a lone letter to the editor reflecting majority opposition.

Earlier this month, #Socorro County #NewMexico voted for a 1 year #AI data center moratorium: https://www.dchieftain.com/news/socorro-county-approves-data-center-moratorium-amid-opposition/3060668

Earlier still, reporting came out that, regarding the AI rodeo, Green Data & its CEO, Jason Bak, are basically all hat and no cattle: https://sourcenm.com/2026/06/09/a-canadian-developers-new-mexico-data-center-pitch-may-be-dying-it-wouldnt-be-the-first-time/

I should be surprised NMT didn't know, but I'm not.

New Mexico Tech steps back as residents trace CEO's trail of failed data center pitches

Residents became more wary after learning about Bak's earlier Illinois proposals, including a crypto-mining plan in Murphysboro that was never built.
