Those of us who found real friendship in the era when MIRC was the bomb might tend to glorify those old days. But in retrospect, even back then, finding a community you really liked and finding real friends wasn't easy. It took time and patience.
What helped, I think, was that the technology was still new, and many of the people joining MIRC were there because they wanted conversation, new connections, and were perhaps a little curious about the tech itself.
