The deeper I dwell on American culture the more I discover that Americans diverge from Europeans on the definitions of critical terms for "Western civilization", Christian being one of them.
In a way not surprising as the initial batch of immigrants contained a high percentage of religious heretics fleeing Europe. So for that one term that's understandable.
