Finally have time to read @pluralistic’s “Enshittification”. Really late to the party but love Cory’s work so I’m thrilled. And it’s a lovely spring evening here in Montana.
Irony of using a kindle — partly solved by it being jailbroken and buying the book from @craphound
@prietschka @pluralistic @craphound it’s an *old* kindle paperwhite! I think it’s a 2018 model. I want one with a bigger screen but it works fine (battery life is still insanely good) and it fits in my back pocket which is nice for the rare occasions I don’t have my backpack with me. I’ve done so much research about e-readers but I don’t want to give amazon money and other options like Kobo have their own downsides.
@jolness @prietschka @pluralistic
I recently got a BOOX reader. Seems to work fine.
Amazon is ending support for older Kindles and Kindle Fires

Amazon is ending support for several Kindle and Kindle Fire devices released in 2012 and earlier, including the original model from 2007.

Or just stay offline and upload from Gutenberg etc. over USB. That's how I've been using my old kindle keyboard for years (I occasionally read new stuff in the kindle app on my phone, but prefer paper).
@jolness I have a Kindle Paperwhite, but I like Kobo better. Whether it fits in your back pocket depends on your pants.
@jredlund @jolness reference the multitude of memes that fit into men's pockets, while women are allowed half an iPhone.
@jredlund I don't think alot of them even fit half an iPhone. Sometimes I envy that purses are a normal thing for women, then I remember that a lot of the time, the pockets aren't even real, just a facade.

@jolness @prietschka @pluralistic @craphound that's a workhorse model! I picked one up on the big auction site and used it for years before passing to my FIL, he used it for years before passing it to his grandson, he's had it nearly a year

the battery is not what it once was, the display has cell damage, and there are no direct-replace parts available - but it's durable enough to charm regardless

I have just made my shift away from the Amazon / Kindle ecosystem and went with this: PocketBook Versa Pro.

This is small and fits in pockets (ha, ha) much better than the Kindle Paperwhite that I had.

They have their own store and cloud sync, and it is a European stack.

Considered Kobo, as it is Canadian, but decided against another "big" integrated system.

Can buy my books from Kobo, but still have to be locked into DRM (Adobe Digital Edition) from there, and they sync fine onto the PocketBook

@jolness Where in Montana is that?
@mike It's at Rocky Mountain College in Billings. Some of the buildings have been there since there was nothing but dirt roads and the land around was all farm land (they still have a big equestrian program but its now in the middle of town). The one in front of me was built in the late 1800s iirc.
@jolness Looks like a nice campus. I spent some time up at MSU's Billings campus for work back in the 90s, but never made it over there.
