John Cage’s Silent, Avant-Garde Piece 4′33″ Gets Covered by a Death Metal Band

When we think of silence, we think of meditative stretches of calm: hikes through deserted forest paths, an early morning sunset before the world awakes, a staycation at home with a good book.

i hate this ... it misses the point

i don't mind the boosting or anything ...

the piece is to help you listen to the music (sounds) around you, not watch some metal heads standing around thinking they're cool by name checking john cage

it's actually an american zen koan

(other opinions equally valid)

@js0000 @openculture Respectfully I disagree. I’ve always taken the piece to be about awareness of the ambient sounds, and this certainly does that for this particular context. And I like to think that Cage would have gotten a kick out of his piece performed in such a different context from its usual manner.

@openculture

ok fair enough

watching a video focuses awareness on the video sounds (guys moving around, digital hiss, &c.)

some only listen to computers with headphones ...

the sounds coming from a computer are only one part of the overall ambience

and then why are you watching these metal heads?

remember, at the premiere, the piano lid was closed (off) during each "movement" ...

there is not one absolute truth with creativity

@js0000 @michaelgemar @openculture Normally there’s an ensemble sitting in front of you on stage, not just 4 guys.
I give you the score for 4’33. Seems like these gentlemen qualify.
