LA Times: After an L.A. windstorm, he used fallen trees to make furniture with a story behind it

"...After a 2011 windstorm destroyed over 1,200 Pasadena trees, architect Chris Peck launched Keita Design to transform fallen urban wood into handcrafted furniture.

Fallen trees get new life as midcentury-inspired furnishings in L.A.

Following a 2011 windstorm that devastated Pasadena trees, architect Chris Speck started Keita Design to make sure that trees were utilized and not wasted.

@ai6yr
That 2011 windstorm was horrible. So much damage.

@ai6yr Here in Mississauga  we have Sawmill Sid. He takes local fallen trees and sells slices such as the lovely piece of catspaw Elm that my wife made into a bench.

(The fish-eye phone photo makes the legs look out of alignment 🤔, they aren't...)

@TallSimon Oooh, that's a neat bench!

@ai6yr Used to be a place in Emeryville called "The Wooden Duck" that made mid century stuff from recycled wood. They would work out a deal especially with owners of Eichlers like mine when they were due to be torn down

Its super easy to do. When they tore down the Neighbors Eichler to put in the McMansion the demo company was happy to let me have whatever I wanted. Sadly they arrived a day early and I was not home so they tore down the house and chewed it up. That being said I was able to save some the 2X6 tongue and groove planks that make up the roof and made several tables. (Cut to length and sand down to bare. join and glue sections. drill and install dowels for strength then clear coat and add legs. Heck you can even see where the termites got in

@cvvhrn NICE!
@ai6yr Thanks! Super easy and while it takes a bit of time especially sanding down 50 years of paint etc but otherwise total cost including the legs was about 65 usd

@cvvhrn @ai6yr

I miss them.. I have several nice pieces of furniture from them.

@cvvhrn @ai6yr Gods, that wood is gorgeous. You can't get rings like that these days.
