It should be illegal for companies to create waste like this.

@Lazarou Furthermore, it should be illegal for companies to remotely lock-down and/or phone-home hardware that you purchased and physically own.

@Lazarou One of my "if I were king" fantasy laws is that in addition to things like FCC certification, companies would have to put full hardware and software specs, along with things like bootloader keys, in some sort of escrow in order to release a product onto the market. If a company decides to stop supporting that device, all that stuff gets released to the public.

Things should not have to go into a landfill just because the company that made them doesn't want to support them any more.

@sethrichards @Lazarou and if we extend to all consumer products do with mechanical and electrical design artifacts. Sure u can't buy a new gear for your washing machine but u could 3d print one or have it cnc cut by dude at work.

@sethrichards @Lazarou

code repos, api documentation for sw elements, CAD, all held in escro; company dies, it all gets released.
I had exactly the same thought a few months ago, in my head it was Consumer Product End Of Life Initiative (CPEOLI) and even stupidly reserved the domain.
Could have a `CP` mark like CE etc. where you'd know that marked devices where compliant with sku/model # would pt you to a record that shows who still claims support etc. what files are on hand (no contents)..

@sethrichards @Lazarou

I look at the Xbox 360, One and three Wiis sitting in the basement and wish that I could throw linux on those. But nooo, stupid locked bootloaders.
