I remember the oil crisis in the US in 1979.
I worked for an electric construction company delivering material to work crews the summer between undergrad a year of grad school.
There was a big gas tank out back of the warehouse where I'd fill up the 14' rack truck b4 heading out.
If I ran low during the day there was a gas station the co. had an arrangement with I'd go to if possible.
Cars could buy gas on alternate days based on their license plate number, odd plates on ...

odd numbered days, even on even days, usually with a purchase limit.
I was allowed to gas up regardless of the day and was told to cut the line which could be around the block.
Needless to say, not all the car drivers were understanding of my situation as a company employee doing as I was told.

I read that as a request to cut their employees some slack, the situation isn't their fault any more than it was mine 47 years ago.
