Overview Along the entire Gulf Coast of the State of Louisiana, swamps and swampy terrain largely prevent large-scale settlement or even settlement beyond extreme rural densities. As a result, many of the principal cities of Southern Louisiana are actually located away from the immediate parishes facing the Gulf of Mexico, namely the Parishes of Cameron, Vermilion, Iberia (including Marsh Island), Saint Mary, Terrebonne, Lafourche, Jefferson, Plaquemines, and Saint Bernard.
