It's artificial but it's not intelligence. Let's call it machine learning.
Analytical machine learning is an excellent technology for identifying patterns in data.
Generative machine learning is a Venture Capital-fuelled dumpster fire that will crash as soon as people have to pay the actual non-subsidised price for it.

One of the better AI conferences I attended about 16 years ago was "Simulation of Adaptive Behaviour", and indeed one useful definition of intelligence and/or learning is "adapting your behaviour to handle changes in the environment / problem".
Many AI/ML systems incorporate learning. GenAI mostly does not, and is more of a static, boring "fake work" tool than anything else.
