It's artificial but it's not intelligence. Let's call it machine learning.

Analytical machine learning is an excellent technology for identifying patterns in data.

Generative machine learning is a Venture Capital-fuelled dumpster fire that will crash as soon as people have to pay the actual non-subsidised price for it.

@mrundkvist Generative Machine Learning models are just modelling joint distributions of inputs and outputs, not inherently capital fuelled. Bayesian models are Generative models. That's separate from gen-AI, an umbrella marketing term.

LLMs are a small subset of the Generative model family.

No algorithm is inherently VC fuelled. Some are empirically and actually VC fuelled though.

Please enlighten me: are there classes of Generative Machine Learning model that turn a profit today? We seem to agree that LLMs and image generators do not.

@mrundkvist Yeah, Hidden Markov Models (HMM) are widely used in financial market modelling. They do make a profit, but that's only a good thing if you consider financial trading to not be a perverse industry.

A lot of recommender systems are built on generative models (generative model just means learning the distribution of Y conditioned by X).
