Why do American writers do this

All this tells me is that oil tankers are really long

I know that oil tankers are long, and I kind of know what one football pitch looks like, but it’s kind of meaningless to say it’s four of them when all I know is “football pitches are long end to end”

@yassie_j I can't even imagine a less useful unit of measurement to an American than "the length of a soccer field". In fact I think it's probably more useful to me to know a soccer field is one quarter of an oil tanker.
@ra6bit I wonder if it was some way to make it approachable to an international audience, but utterly redics in execution
