John QuigginAs the recent arrest of Ben Roberts-Smith reminds us, war crimes are forever. Quite possibly in 60 years time, a retired Russian officer on holiday at some European tourist destination will be arrested for war crimes committed in Ukaine. And now US soldiers face the same risk.
And, at least in theory, the same is true of Trump and his senior officials. Their Russian and Israel counterparts are already the subject of arrest warrants. If Trump goes ahead with his terrorist threats, consistency will require the ICC to charge him.
Who knows how that would play out. Most ICC signatories have indicated that they would enforce the warrants against Putin and Netanyahu, but it is hard to the same happening with a US President. Then there's the problem (also true of Netanhayu) that allies are complicit in the crimes.
I really don't know where all this will go. Nowhere good, I'm sure.
