Sad to see Braithwaite's tea and coffee shop (to buy tea and coffee to make at home) has closed in Dundee. My husband's next door neighbour in Somerset was an old friend of the former owner, and would visit when he was in the area! We used to sometimes buy Viennese Coffee mix from them. But more recently we've been getting our freshly roasted coffee beans from Empire State Coffee in Dundee (Whitehall Crescent) and especially Sacred Grounds in Arbroath. https://www.thecourier.co.uk/fp/business-environment/business/5466054/dundees-oldest-shop-ja-braithwaite-closes/ #Coffee #Dundee
@vivdunstan Oh no! I remember being taken in there aged about five and being scared of the coffee grinder. That must have been more than 35 years ago. Last time I went in the interior looked and smelled unchanged…
@davidjamesweir It stayed just the same inside right until the end. Dundee's oldest shop, 158 years old. People are hoping the fittings could be taken on / bought by the McManus, to recreate the shop in the museum there. The smell in the shop was amazing. The smell outside the shop was also amazing!
@vivdunstan I wonder what is Dundee’s oldest shop now, how long has Goodfellow and Steven been going…
@davidjamesweir They were founded in 1897 in Broughty Ferry. And still there, with branches elsewhere in the city. I suspect there might be something else a bit older, but they're certainly an old local business.
@vivdunstan My grandparents used to live across the road from the shop on Gray Street, I remember going in there almost as vividly as Braithwaite’s…
@davidjamesweir We live in Monifieth and are regular visitors to Broughty Ferry, especially the Gray Street area. Gray Street has got more wonderful shops, including a fab cheese shop and a superb bookshop. Plus Visocchis is still there. Oh and a Portuguese deli where we pick up freshly made custard tarts, filling the Tupperware container we take in!
@vivdunstan what a shame! I always bought their tea when i lived in Dundee.
@alex yes they will be much missed.
