One of my "milestone" paintings -- I call it so because so much thoughts went into it -- came back badly damaged from a show in Reno. Brought it back to the framer, and now it's home in a great shape again. So wonderful to have a great framer locally, where they know you and your work! Now I have to think twice about participating in local art clubs' shows.

That's such a shame.
We used to have the same problems with Steven's ( @StevenKennard ) work on show in galleries. There seem to be little regard for the fragility of the turned boxes he makes. One, in the SOFA exhibition in Chicago was actually dropped and smashed and unfortunately the gallery representing his work was obliged to charge the inebriated couple for the piece. It was over $1500, I believe. "Oh sh*t" they said and were just about to pick up another piece before they were caught. Steven was there but not around when it happened. That's not the kind of sale you want!
Also, galleries never seem to have the faintest idea on the best way to display his work with lighting and space.

Heart breaking. This was the piece, irretrievably unrepairable. 'Maypole' (the piece behind in this image).
The piece in front was called Spider-Man. They were made from African blackwood, turned and textured and the maypole had cocobolo rings and top. Spider-Man was made with boxwood rings and top.
The fact that these boxes looked a little bit like spinning tops I think was the inspiration for the drunken couple playing with and dropping it, sadly.

@StevenKennard @elliek Terrible. Selling doesn't motivate me, but showing is essential to my art practice, so when I don't feel safe to bring pieces to exhibits, I feel defeated. Such beautiful and unique pieces! Glad you have a wonderful photograph of them at least.
@Tamami @StevenKennard very true. But I'd rather have the box in our collection! The money's long gone (2005?) but the piece would still be here...

In the end I stopped exhibiting in galleries, I'm fortunate to have a room that I made into a small gallery just for my own work. I also traveled a lot demonstrating and holding workshops which enabled me to have an audience for my pieces worldwide. And of course my website.

My goodness, these are beautiful! I am so sorry it wasn't sold to someone who appreciated it.

I eventually had to come to accept that it's a hazard of showing work. It's occurred a few times over my long career and it has on some occasions been possible to make an invisible repair that in no way compromised the piece.

@StevenKennard @elliek @Tamami

Accidents DO happen - they are just easier to accept when by someone who *does* appreciate your work.

And yay for invisible repairs when possible! 🎉
