Watching the Artemis II live feed as the crew just surpassed the furthest distance from earth record previously held by the Apollo 13 crew.

The Artemis crew suggested to the ground crew to name two currently unnamed features of the moon.

The first as "Integrity," the name given to the Orion module by the current crew.

The second as "Carroll" after astronaut Reid Wiseman's late wife, who passed away in 2020.

After that broadcast, the astronauts all had a tearful zero-G group hug 😭

Also really enjoyed this little Easter egg: one of the astronauts was describing the current view of the moon and the earth from their current location, to which CAPCOM responded: "Amaze! Amaze! Amaze!" 🀣

Edit: I just learned the CAPCOM operator in question was Canadian Space Agency's Jenni Gibbons! πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ She was one of the backup astronauts for the Artemis II mission.

Artemis II just entered "loss-of-signal" as it passes behind the far side of the moon. It will be out of contact with earth for about 40 minutes.

This was one of the last moments streamed back to us just before they entered LoS.

@Daveography We really must stop naming things after people. How is it they can β€˜suggest’ to name things anyway? It’s not their moon.

@edwiebe

I get the point you're trying to make, but you know what?

They are the ones who spent most of their lives training for a mission like this, and made it there at great personal risk.

Let them name it for the astronaut's late wife.

@Daveography This whole thing is ridiculous. They don’t have authority to name features but unsurprisingly they do it anyway and people just go with it. I am so incredibly sick of the Bad Place. They’re quite literally destroying the world.

@edwiebe

Ed, this isn't a place humans had been occupying for thousands of years and named for some white male asshole who claims he "discovered" it.

It's a feature on the far side of the moon that very few humans will ever see, much less visit.

And it's named for an astronaut's dead wife.

Not even a last name, a given name.

On a ranking of things destroying the world, naming an obscure, un-prominent feature of the moon "Carroll" doesn't even make it into my rankings

Maybe that's just me.

@Daveography Aww shucks a tender moment. Meanwhile they're bombing children.

@edwiebe

Because of Carroll?

@Daveography Yes, it was Carroll. That's why that country of bombing children.

Laugh and celebrate! Cry with them as they name things. Oh look, news stories about urine and farts! Amazing! Heroes!

Soon they'll be back and more children will be murdered by that country, the one sending heroes up on rockets. What will we look at then? Oh, FIFA!

@edwiebe

God forbid anyone should take a moment out of the horrors that are our current reality to be sentimental, enjoy science and discovery, marvel over engineering and physics, take pride in international collaboration and the diversity of people working on this mission, or even laugh at relatable problems that can happen even 400,000km from earth.

If you want to shit all over that, do it the fuck out of mentions, and don't act like people can't care about more than one thing at once.
