The Israelites knew what God had accomplished through Jesus' life. 

Peter proclaimed how Jesus' death was no accident but part of God's predetermined plan, and yet the people themselves had put Him to death. 

Peter then testified to Jesus' resurrection, and quoted Psalm 16:8-11 to provide David's testimony: all Israel knew that David was in his grave, so he was speaking of his Descendant who would rise from the dead.
