Has anybody tinkered with #meshtastic and the #lilygo T-Deck (Plus) or Pro?

I got curious about Meshtastic and the idea of a stand alone device w/ display and keyboard...

@dec_hl
I got a T-Deck but am still looking for a good use case for #meshtastic
@daherb I'm mostly curious about the messaging. And the T-Deck looks like a mini cyberdeck 🥰

@dec_hl

I was initially attracted to the idea (and also the fact that it's ready-built, though you'll probably still have to flash it with the latest #meshtastic version). Had a play with one. It was OK but eventually I settled on a Heltec V3, plus battery and case, to use with my phone. Also a lot cheaper.

Depends on how you want to use it but for me the convenience of a standalone unit didn't add up.

In fact I've now gone completely the other way and bought a T1000-E, which is just a tag with no display.

I thought a t-deck would be more comfortable to use, but in fact just having a small lora device on my backpack and using my phone is (for me) the most comfortable way.

@dexternemrod

Same. I always carry my phone anyway so it's just a case of using an additional app on it.

@dec_hl Depending on your usecase - but for me, an old smartphone with a USB-(power)cable to a tiny Meshtastic module is a much much much better user experience than the T-Deck. Typing, copy/paste, copy URL from a chat into a browser or my IMAP synced notes, or that kind of stuff. Smartphones have a userland and a rich outer environment. The T-Deck not so much.
Of course, if your aim is mainly battery life or not-using-Android-nor-iOS-at-all, then a T-Deck is nice. Or cool looks.
@dec_hl
The pro does not have the nice standalone-UI with meshtastic. And the version with the external antenna is a design failure: It uses the only USB-C slot (so no antenna while charging) and the connector seems to be designed to get stuck (and damaged) in during transport.
Without external antenna both have a bad range but you can add one to the t-deck (plus) by your self or start with an external.
In general nice devices and the responsivenes is OKish.
