In the Mastodon web interface, how do I post a message that has the visibility of a reply, but that isn't actually a reply?

I want to post a message that will be publicly visible, but that is shown by default only to people who follow both me and @ranjit . I can do this by replying to one of Ranjit's posts. But what if I want to start a new thread?

#mastodonHelp #help

@mjd @ranjit my expectation is that if the toot _starts_ with their username, then it's scoped to them and not public? I'm pretty sure that's how it worked in twitter times at least

@llimllib only if you've set the privacy level appropriately too (https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/posting/#privacy).

Just writing a post that @-mentions someone else does not change the privacy level.

@mjd @ranjit Not possible - https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/posting/#privacy

You can limit visibility to your followers, but not to the intersection (or union) of your followers and Ranjit's followers.

@nikclayton @ranjit Thanks. What I want isn't to limit visibility, but whether the post appears in followers' home feeds, like “Your replies will only appear on your followers’ Home feeds if they follow both you and the person you are replying to”.

But it seems there's no way to get the same behavior for non-replies.

Thanks again.
