The reason abolition is scary is because we've all been told the US prison system is normal and we're all in danger without it.

That's a lie.

Prison labor is a $9 billion industry annually.

That's why they lie to you.

We don't need prisons. We need healthcare, housing, and education for all.

@theleftistlawyer Abolishing prisons may sound “leftist”. But reuniting families, providing good jobs, housing, health care and education - is something that one would think true conservatives would support. Prisons does not reform anyone. It may keep someone locked up and in pain. But it will not reform them. It won’t make them a better person. And it doesn’t seem to be an effective deterrent. So yeah, a reallocation of funds….
@theleftistlawyer and public community spaces not driven by consumerism for people to play, grow, have joy and community without it being gatekept for profit. They don’t want gathering or community spaces unless it’s under guard and in prisons.
@JoBlakely @theleftistlawyer I was thinking the other day about all the lovely community spaces we idolize in fiction, eg college campuses, small towns in Xmas movies, TV shows where everyone goes to each other's workplaces and hangs out the same coffee shop/bar/store/library. These fake communities are friendly, safe, accessible, and neighbors can easily be in each other's lives. Many of us clearly want it, so why can't we just have that all over the place?
@baconandcoconut @theleftistlawyer because every single square inch of land and space must make some profit for the investor & Epstein class.
We have to redefine ownership. Disallow property hoarding. Disallow empty falling apart spaces. Our representatives should be recognizing the value of these things to the community and assisting with financing, grants, programs to help people get started and participating. We need these & they will save money & become community infrastructure.
@JoBlakely @theleftistlawyer Yeah, I know the answer is late stage capitalist greed. But running into a friend you haven't seen in a couple months at the ice cream shop would be so good.
