"In Belgium, employees receive compensation for every kilometre they ride, with some cyclists earning up to €810 per year.

And why not? Biking saves public money for everyone."

“All employees in Belgium who cycle to work are entitled to a bicycle allowance of €0.28 per kilometre of their commute.”

Belgian commutes pay off: Employees earn up to €810 for cycling to work

One in five people in Flanders commuted by bike and received compensation last year, but this figure is significantly lower in Brussels and Wallonia.

@KeithDJohnson

In Germany, we plan to raise a thing called "Pendlerpauschale" to favourize car commuting.

Provided by all tax payers, not only car users. Of course.

@AppleWoi Is Germany mimicking trump? A 'commuter allowance' seems like the opposite of what's needed. Mimic Belgium instead.

@KeithDJohnson

Easier said than done with a retarded fossil government led by Mr. Burns.

@AppleWoi You have my deepest sympathy.Good luck removing that fossil fool. I hope ours dies ASAP.💚
@AppleWoi @KeithDJohnson And the higher your income is, the more you benefit from it.

@neuimneuland @AppleWoi @KeithDJohnson
Yeah, it is amazing. 🙄

If you make less than 10,000 EUR/a gross, you don't get anything. If you earn enough such that money doesn't pain you, you get around 42 to 50 % of the 0.30 EUR/km as a tax return.

@martin_ueding @neuimneuland @AppleWoi Clearly some inequity flaws in the system.

@KeithDJohnson

So many questions.

Do ebikes count?

Do riders get periodically audited to assure they're actually doing the trips?

Do riders have to submit log sheets for their rides?

@number6 Those are very good questions. Sadly, the article does not address them.
@number6 Tada! I searched and got the details. https://www.mbrella.eu/blog/bike-allowance-belgium

@KeithDJohnson

0.37 Euro would be pretty good even for cars, I think. I guess you can use it to fuel op on Stroopwafels.

@number6 Mmm. Stroopwafels.👍

@KeithDJohnson

I wasn't actually that impressed by stroopwafels. But pannenkoeken ... I could do a 10km ride after pannenkoeken.

Or take a nap.

This video shows stroopwafels being made. Just before the "octopus" machine, the waffles are being sliced *horizontally*.

I'm lucky if I can slice bread.

Dutch Stroopwafels: How They Are Made!

@number6 😄
I've only rarely had imported or domestic stroopwaffels but pannenkoeken is a meal I enjoy, only high egg low gluten, like crêpes.

@KeithDJohnson

Of all those images, this is most like the ones I had. It's like a crêpe, but there are extra ingredients cooked into the "cake". Could be savory (bacon) or fruity (appels).

If memory serves, you're in the Mitten state? So probably not far from the Dutch triangle. Yet don't recall that anyone there ever talked about stroopwafels or pannenkoeken. Just wooden shoes and tulips .. for the tourists.

And all the way to the UP if you want pasties.

@number6

I'll have to try a savory version with bacon. Sounds good.
As a Yooper I grew up eating pasties made by local Finn grandmothers. I'm now in the lower peninsula where hardly anyone knows about them.
In Holland MI, there may be stroopwaffels available but I haven't explored enough. They do have a big annual public giveaway of tulip bulbs after they've bloomed. $20 to fill a 5 gallon bucket. 👍

@KeithDJohnson well, you do also get compensated for every kilometer your ride by car, furthermore, you get less per km for biking (a car of course costs more in upkeep and gas).
That is not really what motivates bike commuting.
What does however, is the leasing system for bikes. You get to pay off your new bike with your salary before taxes, generally adding up to saving 30% to 40% of the bike price (plus insurance and upkeep). Then after three years you get to choose whether to keep the bike and buy it at a “rest value” (10%-15% of the original retail price) or start a new leasing.
Which means the second hand bike market is *also* booming with tons of well kept bikes at great prices.

@twix Thanks for that. I encourage this kind of shift in thinking.💚

Also, commuting in any transport, but especially biking (& outdoor correlates), all are enhanced by not being forced to breathe combustion byproducts.

@KeithDJohnson agreed! Although the Antwerp region I’m in makes that pretty challenging with often poor AQI’s

@twix

I'm anticipate that much of the US will soon, again, be breathing combusted forests & building byproducts.
