Okay, so this is just curiosity, but does anyone else out there have what I will call "Minecraft Syndrome"? That is to say, the problem of things being TOO open-ended? Like, you ask someone, "So what should I do?" And all they can say is, "Whatever you want to do!" as though it's a good thing, but then you just wind up doing nothing because you have the option of doing anything. Or is this just a "me" thing?

Well, ADHD paralysis over here so... Yes. Yes, too many choices is an impossible hell.

@shaknais Ooof, that's rough. Any tips for processing it? Or it usually just a "don't get into that situation" kind of a thing?

@rez

Avoidance never works that well with most things, unfortunately. Things like this tend to be... A lifelong journey of tips and tricks. Things that work sometimes, rather than nice and calm rules to follow.

The paralysis is part neurological - which you can't do much about, unless you medicate. Works for some. Not everyone.

Its also part emotional - mindfulness and the usual controls can help there.

And part environmental - change the space you're in, the things around you, it can help.

@shaknais Curses - all of those points I invested in escapism are perhaps poorly spent.

But thanks for the tips! I'll have to look into the other bits then. I feel like I need to start figuring this puzzle out. I'll say that it's certainly a "better late than never" sort of thing.

I got my ASD1 diagnosis at 33 years old. It wasn't the easiest thing, but it opened more doors than I expected. Mostly about being okay with myself, and being okay with not fitting in the boxes the world defines, at times.

I still escape. Writing, games, programming. Those are places my thoughts can finally shut the fuck up. Nothing wrong with that. But understanding how I think, also helps with groceries, work, and the day to day.

But... It is a journey. Everyone's is a lil different.

@shaknais Aww, I love that. Really happy to hear that you’ve been able to get some positives from the experience.

I DO feel like I need to start being a little more responsible with this and take *some* steps to work with it so that I’m not just dead weight. Guess I too need to pick up my cloak and wizard’s staff.

Oh! One technique that works really well for reasons I don't get, is body-doubling. Do things with someone else. They initiate, and you can usually do the rest all on your own.

Folding clothes or picking a game to play. Just having someone to talk it over makes things kickstart for some reason.

So much so, my gov is actually funding people to talk to on the phone.

@shaknais Oh man, I get that!! My wife looks at me sideways when I say that I just need her there to initiate a thing like laundry or whatever, but just having someone along to nudge or initiate helps *so* much! I figured that was just another weird β€œme” thing.
