Shrug. The GOP has A/B tested and lying works for them better than telling the truth. Understandable.

(As one of our local Austrian conservative politicians joked that the conservative party (ours) is the whore of the rich, the joke was as well received as planned and I'm not sure if such a nice take description would do for the GOP, so yes, lying is a rational behaviour. Not very social, but hey they are the anti-social party anyways)

@wdlindsy It's not cynicism; it's IMHO an important insight that lying is a completely rational behavior for a political party that has little to nothing to offer in “real” goodies in its program for the big majority of voters.

And the conservatives/fascists of the world seem to have “discovered” this (or their marketing/PR consultants did) over the past 2 decades (timelines vary a bit by country).

Presto you get emotional campaigns based on fake facts, alternate realities, …

It's hard to argue with "feelings".

Yesterday I saw a really ugly “demo” of this, a comedian who likes to chat with his viewers. A Canadian (0th generation, herself an immigrant) complained that the biggest problem in Canada is “immigrants”. (Not realizing that the Canadian immigration system is generally considered the gold standard for Western immigration systems, "we pick the immigrants who we need". But I guess the lady listened too much to emotional bullshit.

Note that you cannot counter that with facts, or ask these people for facts (“So how many of these 'bad' immigrants came to Canada last year?”, “I have no idea, too many.”)

So yes, I'm all for doing something, but please, with concrete tips on how to counter the current strategies these right-wing rat catchers are using.

Because few people realize that lying is most often a two party activity: one party emits the lie, and the other one happily and willingly accepts it.
