hellloooo #PopOS fiends. How does one type/select emoji on 24.04 #Cosmic!?

I've tried Super + period, Super + semicolon (both do nothing), have checked the shortcuts menu for mentions of emoji (none), have installed the Emoji Mart and later Emote flatpaks (they open but won't enter emoji into any text field - may be an X11/Cosmic issue?)

help!? I am a millennial and I truly need emoji access on my system 😭

oh and I have also tried Ctrl + Shift + E >> Space, as per https://www.reddit.com/r/pop_os/comments/1l2ip9d/is_there_a_builtin_emoji_picker/, which also does Nothing ™️

oh uh I got a partial workaround going, it seems? the Emote flatpak appears to work, AND I managed to assign it a custom shortcut.

only thing is I'd much prefer if the emoji was entered directly into the text field - with this solution, still have to copy/paste the emoji. but at least it's *a* solution!?

@robyn you will need to make a custom shortcut for that, you need to find the binary and link that as the command for the custom shortcut. Cosmic still needs an native emoji app

@thed4rknss Hah that's funny, I had JUST managed to do that when I saw your comment come in!!

It's a bit cumbersome as the emoji are not getting entered directly into the field (sigh, that's where I miss 22.04). It requires copy/paste, but hey, at least it's something!

@robyn

At least you can work around it :D

Cosmic still incomplete, i would stay in 22.04 if had that installed already.

@thed4rknss Yyyyeah it wasn't an upgrade... I am running 22.04 on a different device (an old laptop) and love it. When I finally kicked Windows 11 off my desktop yesterday, I went with 24.04 as I was really looking forward to Cosmic.

I think it'll be ok, it's a bit rough around the edges, but so far all the critical pieces are working & the rest are mostly mild annoyances (to me - YMMV, as with all things Linux 😅 )

... I do have a Mint USB drive on standby tho, just in case 😂

@robyn I installed 24.04 on my sister laptop, she just uses for study, so it's a solid option with a cool functions, specially the tilling.

My main PC is running CachyOS with Niri, to extract all the juice 😆

it's always good have a backup distro, mine is also Mint 😂
