bluesky is doing mastodon discourse again and i really wish people would separate out the experience of people with, like, under 3k followers

for whom mastodon can be as good or easily better a time

with the >10k follower folks who really aren’t wrong when they find it worse for them here

i further submit to you that if you feel it is necessary you have more followers than athens had inhabitants in 900bc, you have done an xkcd1075 on your social brain

@maya if i get that many i'll go live in a barrel

@maya there are definitely some exceptions (and props to them for handling it) but my default heuristic is to simply not follow people with tons of followers.

their better stuff gets boosted anyway

and their worst stuff is either because (a) they LIKE/DESERVE to be so famous or (b) they DO NOT WANT to be so famous.

@maya I've only ever wanted "followers" who want to talk to me about common interests. I read all of their profiles.

There's something fundamentally broken in people who seek followers for the sake of numerical bragging rights.

Human beings aren't collectibles.
