@thing it's a way to split up an archive into multiple pieces

iiuc it's more meant for topsites which commonly use FTP for transfers, if one archive gets corrupted in transit it's easier to refetch the broken part

this was a more common problem "back in the day" when internet was more unreliable and re-downloading the entire file would mean a significant timeloss, but it's still common practice today
