Oh they knew. Somehow the story was changed into doubt, due to efforts by John E. Sununu, Chief of Staff for George HW Bush.
“I don’t want anyone in this administration without a scientific background using ‘climate change’ or ‘global warming’ ever again,” he said.
His influence on Bush kept the US from engaging in a climate treaty, the only large nation not participating.
