I can see why Drupal *isn't* doing this yet. It would require Layout to be enabled in the Standard profile, which may be a step too far. Views is, and I've never seen a reason to question that.

Even so, using Layout on Taxonomy Term pages makes them *so damn useful*. Now they're no longer those annoying pages no one bothers to theme, but capable of becoming landing pages in their own right.

Set the default layout for all terms + allow customization = instant customizable term dashboards.
