@robpumphrey in Germany, people can actually get sentenced for "lifetime license suspension until psychological reevaluation" and it's the norm for DUI cases with casualties or other gross acts of dangerous behaviour in traffic, like purposefully running over someone.

@robpumphrey Granted, that usually means they can't reapply for a license for a period of at least 2 years and will have to convince a specifically certified psychologist that they ain't relapse if not provide proof of abstinence for a long time when it comes to DUIs - at their own expense.
- But that's because in Germany, a driving license is not a right but a privilegue...

A driving licence is a right, not a privilege in the UK too, but it appears to be just about impossible to ban people for life. We don't even do any re-testing of drivers, or compulsory medical checks.

@robpumphrey I mean, Germany doesn't do that either except for classes C(1)(E) & D(1)(E) and even then, people with old German Class 3 licenses (that got converted to C1E) are exempted from that.
- Personally, I think that if one has to renew said cards, they may just also do a quick vision and hearing test which doesn't cost that much.
- In fact glasses stores like Fielmann offer a free certified eye exam as they make that money by offering people glasses and contact lenses on the spot if they fail at it.
As for the tests, C(1)(E) have a basic medical checkup once every 5 years by an officially certified physician (not one's GP!) and do some more extensive checkup for D(1)(E) cuz that's for buses.
Tho at costs exceeding €10k for a DE license (which includes D1, D, D1E, C, C1, C1E, CE) - not including the necessary car driving license (exceeding €2k) it's quite rare that those that reach these do the few things that suspend them from said license.
