It bugs me when something hits mainstream tech news that a) was actually news a long time ago (See also https://github.com/mdp/linkedin-extension-fingerprinting which was posted a long time ago) + nobody noticed till now, and b) the publication isn't being genuine - not reporting the full story.
The whole LinkedIn thing - it only does that 6000 extension scan in Chromium based browsers. If you don't use Chromium browsers, this isn't a thing (and I don't understand why you'd ever willingly use a Chromium browser anyway).
Is LInkedIn still malware? Yes, very yes. Is this story as big as it's being made out to be? Not necessarily.
