oh shit they got AI in my light pens :(

#retrocomputing #lightpen

in all seriousness this sounds like an impressive graphics system for 1984, if half of the claimed features are true.

There was a light pen for the Apple II called the Gibson Light Pen.

It was named after its inventor, Steve Gibson.

Yes, THAT Steve Gibson.

#retrocomputing

He's most famous for his MFM hard drive utility SpinRite, but he got his real start making light pens. I love that for him.

But back to Lenipen for a moment.

One thing I love about looking through early 80's PC Magazine is that the 80's modern tech aesthetic had been firmly established by most computer companies but some of them just did not get the memo that the decade had ticked over.

Because this ad is 70's af and I love it more than words can express.

Optional SPACE-AGE SOUNDS

Yes, please. In fact, make them mandatory

it is now my sole purpose and mission in life to find a copy of this software

it just gets better the longer you look at it.

I love the list of college majors at the top left. Graphic Design, Electronics, Chemistry, Animation, and Bar Chart.

I am completely and totally speechless.

I found a short review of Lenipen in a 1986 edition of PC Magazine.

There is a screenshot of its user interface.

I was not prepared. You are not prepared.

LENIPEN IS A GIANT GREEN HEAD

I swear to God this is real. Go look if you don't believe me

I thought the light pen had nothing more to offer, no more secrets to discover. This world truly is filled with many magical things

Internet Archive

i do not plan these threads. i just sit down open internet archive and start posting what i find. you saw this happen in realtime

my utter astonishment in this moment is 100% real

Here is proof that human beings once interacted with Lenipen, who apparently in an earlier incarnation was Charlie Chaplin. I think IBM had exclusive rights to that...

I am a big enough light pen nerd now to be able to tell you that she is using a Symtec light pen there.

I mean, obviously.

How do I know? Symtec pens had the unique design quirk of using a capacitive touch ring instead of a button. You can see her finger on the touch ring in the photo.
I am so very lonely.
I will recreate Lenipen from scratch if I have to

okay there's something really weird going on.

look at the results for this google search:

what the hell is going on??

is reality breaking?

i didn't do it, I swear.

WHO IS WAYNE
I found a color version of the Lenipen Lady
I'm going to call her Lenore
this isn't light pen related but I had to see it so now you have to, too

I've been doing some research.

I now know who wrote Lenipen.

This is going to shock you, I'm sure, but his name is Lenny.
