Does anyone have any advice in getting HRT provided by Italy's NHS? Can I just bring it up to my medico di base?

For context, I'll be moving (temporarily?) for work, since that I have diabetes, I'll already be signing up for the NHS

In the meantime I'll have vials delivered at home from a DIY lab, but having proper care would be good
@violetmillie real answer is “it depends” , what region will u be in ? in general tho , youll need to do a bit of work with a therapist that is able / willing to release a letter that enables you to then contact an endo , but really it depends as i said

@violetmillie hey! sadly your medico di base cannot prescribe them to you as you’d need some other pieces of paper, the process for getting the meds actually paid by the SSN is a bit difficult, but in synthesis the steps are:

  • contact a psychologist/psychiatrist and get a nulla osta (diagnosis for gender dysphoria, also stating you are certain in your choice and are able to make informed decisions)
  • ask your medico di base for a “prima visita endocrinologica” with quesito diagnostico “DIG” (disturbo dell’identità di genere)
  • your endo will make you sign an informed consent paper about HRT, and will give you the meds free of charge, and will follow you from there on out (if done in SSN)
  • in practice this is complicated by the wait times for endos with experience in gender dysphoria being >1y, what i had to do was start privately (where you still pay for your meds at a pharmacy, but they get prescribed by your endo).

anyways, good luck, sadly wait times are always pretty insane around here. if you need any help, let us know

@violetmillie also, note that there are no industeial injectable estradiol formulations approved by the italian pharmaceutical body, so you’ll have to choose between gel, patches and pills. otherwise you can get it synthesized by a “farmacia galenica” but it costs way too much and won’t be paid by the SSN.
@violetmillie I'm... pretty sure that's gonna be hard. Do you have any former prescription from the UK NHS? That might help in landing you a direct confrontation with a specialist. Problem is: no SSN (Italian NHS) doctor allows vials/injections.
Soooo... I'd just suggest you to go with a private endocrinologist.
I can hook you up with one, though I can't guarantee she'll be able within the next couple weeks...
