I, for one, am deeply saddened by the amount of intelligent people around me who keep calling “AI” a tool. https://mastodon.online/@larsmb/116345546702744292

This is somewhat driven by my own experiences that I grapple with, and last week, I spent surrounded with a very diverse, very smart/educated group whose lives and countries-of-origin are even more impacted than mine, and who're all intent on bettering the world. And yet, "AI" was used as a matter of course by *everyone* while we were discussing the ethical and societal implications, and started the week with a deep dive on the exploitative supply chain. So, uh, quo vadis?

@maaikees I feel that those who call AI a tool are using it purely as justification for their own use of it @larsmb

@andycarolan @maaikees To be fair, my post _didn't_ refer to "AI" (which is a very broad term) as such.

Though I don't fully understand why that plethora of algorithms wouldn't meet the definition of a non-material tool.

(Tools aren't neutral, tools can be weapons, tools can be unethically sourced, tools can displace labor, tools can be of varying levels of accuracy ... i.e., calling it a tool diminishes none of the problems.)

Would you be willing to elaborate?

@larsmb @maaikees happy to elaborate a bit later… I am on my phone at the moment and prefer to type on a keyboard.

However, in short, my gripe is focused on Gen AI as that’s where I perceive the most damage being done.

@larsmb Are we chatting about the same posts btw, as AI was mentoned in them. Forgive me if I am misunderstanding the context.

Anyway, my issue is with Gen AI specifically it is often used to replace, not augment human creativity. Image creation tools being used to create assets within video games for example, where skilled artists used to be commissioned. AI generated music flooding playlists, AI generated podcasts and videos. Using Gen AI is more a push for greater profits than delivering quality. @maaikees
