My favorite hobby category is tracking things.

I like tracking movies I watch, books I read, music I listen to, plants & animals I encounter, birds I see/hear.

I do most of this on proprietary, closed source software. but I will soon move it to my own website or self-host it on my home server.

@spacebuffer I love that as well ๐Ÿฅฐ saw a documentation years ago: before big data there was a random nerd with a gigantic spreadsheet tracking history of almost everything in his life. I loved that idea!

I still use Letterboxd and I accidentally bought a year of bearable, but I switched some tracking to open source Apps. Migraine Log, Med Timer, trale (weight), Food you (from the top of my head).
There are letterboxd alternatives but it's so pretty and I like to read the reviews of others๐Ÿ˜…

@spacebuffer I would love a tutorial on how to track everything (or almost everything) on my selfhosted server (got a raspi 5 working for me). So please share your journey if you want to, I'll keep track (lol)
@onni For sure I'll let you know when I get something out on my blog. Building my homelab has taken longer than expected due to the hardware shortage, but oh well.
@spacebuffer I see! I was dreaming of a homelab before the price spike and I managed to get a raspberrypi 5 earlier this year for a now ridiculous low price ๐Ÿ˜… but it's "just" a raspi so my homelab will have to fit into that

@onni Awesome, health tracking is something I hadn't thought of it but I'd probably skip on this one because I have enough health anxiety as it is haha.

Indeed letterboxd is awesome, one of the few "traditional" social media sites I actively enjoy using, it feels in line with the smallweb values.

@spacebuffer letterboxd getting this "commercial videostore" vibe is a little bit troubling but I really love all the ridiculous and zynical or full of sarcasm reviews of (my guess) all the Gen Z'๐Ÿ˜‚

I think it's a nice benefit that the oss health tracker apps don't "yell" at you. These are plain optics, subtle reminders and not so much commercial attention grabber apps. I'm truly conflicted with Bearable. I need tracking my symptoms and I wanna track my mood, but its so capitalistic ๐Ÿคก
