This is my comment for #alto public feedback page:
I understand the concerns some people have about the project, they're totally valid, but we need to consider the broader context.
Not building a HSR system means we continue building new highways, widening existing ones, endless suburban sprawl, bigger and louder airports, and continuing to turn high value farmland into walmart parking lots.
What we're doing right now is not sustainable. We've lost about 18% of Ontario's farmland in the past 35 years. The only way we stop that bleed is to build proper transit and rethink the way we build cities and communities. This project, like any others, will come at some costs, but the long term benefits will greatly improve our trajectory in this country. We can plainly see that what we're doing right now isn't working.
