An interesting fact I learned today: there _were_ #Armenian language stenographers, even institutionally trained, in Soviet Union! My prior guess was that Soviet Russian GESS #stenography was forced on all Soviet people. Apparently not.

I should ask around libraries. Because oh god, if I would have Armenian phonetic stenography, I’ll basically cover all of English and most of Russian! I want my stenography like that.

@aartaka
I'm not an expert on the Soviet Union, but it's clear that, despite forcing education about the Russian language, they nonetheless were faced with many different languages in use in their satellite countries.

BTW have you become fluent in Armenian?

@dougmerritt I’m nowhere close to fluency in Armenian, but I really appreciate the language in its foundations. Such a well-designed piece—and it was actually designed during early Soviet Armenia times, so it’s almost a conlang! (Correction: I cannot find the sources for that statement.) One of the cool points is phonetics—40+ sounds, covering almost all of English / Shawian and most of Russian. It’s a good basis for stenography, regardless of actual Armenian knowledge.
