Can a modular synthesizer without MIDI or samples or a computer do synthwave? You be the judge.

Not pictured: the modular synth. But I went for a nice n stereotypical graphic

@eg0n I'd say that's definitely pretty close, and I'd probably go out on a limb and call it synthwave.

Although, as a long-time synthwave fan, I want to say that the sound is just a little too clean - it's missing those MIDI string overtones and chords that are kinda the signature sound of synthwave. Do you know what I'm talking about? Like, that whole "string section" patch or MIDI sound is what I'm talking about. I don't really know how else to describe it.

Your version sounds like synthwave for the NES (not meant to be disparaging in any way, just meaning to capture the digital "clean-ness" of it).

@SynAck though it is funny how much of "synthwave" is conceptualized as "retro" but really it's almost entirely anachronistic.

I mean, synthwave drums are super modern - very loud in the mix and very aggressive sounding, the extreme side chained compression on the kick vs the bass is a new technique, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I love it, I have like every record Electric Dream Records has published , I love synthwave stuff and have for a long time too. Just saying, it's very modern and I'm ok with that 😂

I mean other than maybe Laura Branigan's "Self Control" and maybe the Outrun soundtrack, not a lot of music from the 1980s would sound like "synthwave"

Do you have a personal favorite single synthwave track/tune ?

@eg0n honestly, for me, the quintessential synthwave track has been "I Feel Love" by Donna Summer. The Blue Man Group did a cover of it on their Complex tour (which I got to see live) that was really great also.

But whenever I hear synthwave, I always think of Donna Summer - synthwave before there was the synthwave genre.

An honorable mention would of course be the original TRON soundtrack (particularly "The Game Sea/Solar Sailer"), and Daft Punk's TRON: Legacy soundtrack would be a much more modern take with tracks like "The Grid" and "End Of Line".

For a more modern and local flavor, I really dig @syntheholfm's "Clouds" track.
