“But adequately stigmatizing Rowling’s weaponization of childhood not only requires personal withdrawal for most people, it necessitates something much more difficult: being a giant fucking killjoy. You should tell people discussing the show that you’re not watching it, and why, and you should let yourself openly cringe at your sister-in-law’s Harry Potter tote bag, and you should bring up unprompted that the onslaught of legislation against trans people makes you sad and angry, presuming it does, and you should do this because, not despite, the fact that it will make you look annoying as hell and may make everyone present uncomfortable.”

It’s Time To Grow Up | Defector

HBO’s new Harry Potter TV series is premiering this Christmas Day. Under current plans, it will last at least a decade. The trailer looks like the original films were run through an AI generator, but quality isn’t the point. The show is a transparent attempt to induct a new generation—and market—into the lucrative fantasy world

"Most trans people, everywhere they go, have to be the outnumbered loser who cares about the anti-trans movement, and who notices how that movement lodges itself in “safe” territory, in order to make calling it out look crazy and unreasonable."

@snowyfox
"wont' somebody think of the children..."

"...not the trans children though"

@harris "it will make you look annoying as hell and may make everyone present uncomfortable"

(Extremely vegan voice) "While you were partying, I studied the blade"

@harris Hand them some Pratchett. Tiffany Aching is a better female role model anyway.
@Giliell @harris Nanny Ogg is a better role model.
@nzlemming @harris Nanny Ogg is who I want to be in my Crone Years.
@Giliell @harris Or A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik, or A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin. I bet there's more.
@harris I am pleased to say that neither I nor anyone I care for gives a crap about stupid H Potter.
@harris For once, do as the racist uncle does!

The four faces in the article image look like they were photoshopped into place, ignoring lighting and perspective.

Uncanny.

@reinderdijkhuis

@xinit @harris The article compares the look of the new series to "the new movies run through an AI filter" and that tracks.
@reinderdijkhuis @xinit @harris I didn't look closely and I really thought the article image was a painting.

@harris

I'm seeing a Rings of Power-type debacle coming.
Those of you who were accused of being Tolkien "purists" by that show's spin-quacks may have fond memories of the very thorough, and months long, bagging that Bezoz's Tolkien perversion show received.
A lot of fun was had at a nasty billionaire's great expense.
A repeat with this production would cost HBO a lot of money and move JKR's works to the "financially risky, or even disastrous" category.

My daughter had a "Mudblood" tattoo that she decided to have covered up quite a few years ago. I am extremely proud of her.

@harris I saw someoneclaim her books would still be read long after the true classics got forgotten...

and thats just sad, and not true.

All the clasics did not need constant marketing shoving the books into people faces to be remembered

@harris i for one am so excited that everyone else is starting to take up the art of "make them as uncomfortable as they've made you," is so useful in determining who can really hang.
