Just throwing this out there for non-religious people who often seem confused by certain current events:

American evangelicals nearly universally have zero interest in what a pope has to say on a subject. By and large, they give the Pope's opinion the same weight as, say, the Dalai Lama's, which is to say, none whatsoever.

I mention this because I see things like "Trump says X but the pope says Y. How will his base react?" His base couldn't care less.

@tek

yup. nazi/kkk put everyone other than a narrow group of evangelical christian faiths all in the same bucket. catholics, muslims, jews, satanists. all the same to them.

@paul_ipv6 Yup, but more charitably, even the most leftist of evangelicals dismiss Catholic teaching. It's not relevant to them at all. The Pope literally does not exist in their chain of command: he's just another leader of just another religion that they don't participate in.
@tek @paul_ipv6 Was raised catholic, the number of times I heard "That's like Christianity, right?" from protestants - even the adults - is a huge number.

@aaron @paul_ipv6 Yep. And I only bring all this all up because a lot of people who aren't evangelical or catholic seem to think the 2 sects overlap, when they don't at all.

"Ooh, let's see what happens when that Southern Baptist senator finds out the Pope disagrees with him!"

That senator does not care whatsoever, never has, never will. It's like finding out that the mayor of Lagos thinks you're wrong. Uh, OK?

@aaron @paul_ipv6 (I say that as a member of neither side. Although I was raised in one, I don't believe in either. I mention all this from a protestant POV but the same's true in reverse. Tell a catholic senator that the head of the Southern Baptist Convention thinks he's wrong, and the sole reason he'll care is if it affects a significant number of his voters. Religiously, he'd shrug and immediately forget about it because it's not relevant to him.)

@tek

Some of us around the world have KNOWN for a few years (15-20) that the US has its own religion: a kind of cult-ish chrstian-money mishmash, a sort of fascist dogma of white nationalism-supremacism that has warped their brains and CANNOT be considered part of the old established religions of the world but something new and unique to usonians,
AND. IT. FUCKING. SUCKS. FIREY. BALLS.

@tek chiming in as an ex-Mormon within the Zion curtain : trumps base included Catholics, Mormons, Protestants, etc. The pope’s statement, Romney’s opposition, McCain ‘s disdain, etc. does erode bullshit claims about any of all (hand waves) *THIS* being divinely-driven or a party litmus test. Batshit’s gonna stay batshit, but some folks will quit them.

@InkomTech Fair point, and I hope you're right! If the margin is razor thin, it wouldn't take many defectors before he starts costing elections.

I only wanted to explain to some people that telling an Assemblies of God person that the Pope thinks they're wrong isn't the "gotcha" they think it might be. They simply won't care.

@tek and there’s a degree of fuckeduppedness deep in Mormon country. Mormons have been SO gung ho about Mittens for _years_. He was ‘first Mormon president’ material. So so gung ho. And yet a ton of Mormons literally hate him now because they chose to side with Trump.

Blows my mind.

@InkomTech Oh, I'm sure! Along those lines, I remember when the GOP liked John McCain.

Don't even get me started on Jesus.
