A cool thing about making art in a book like this is that you just have to let go of the fear of how something will "turn out". The page is going to be there whether you like the result or not.

I do happen to like these pages, but there is no knowing what the art will look like until you have made it. Giving yourself permission to make *anything*, regardless of what the end result will be is key to unleashing creativity.

Sharing what you make (at least with people you trust) can be really, really helpful for your creative process as well.

The left page above is based on an idea I had while lying in bed last night. The right is a result of my spouse's comment on the left page, & how it reminded him of pointillism. It gave me an idea of something to try next based on what I was already playing with.

I sit at my art desk & say things aloud to my spouse while I'm working like "It is ok to start making something & not know what it will look like. It is ok to try things. It is ok to create just for its own sake."

I have to keep saying those things to believe them. It is really hard to make anything without feelings of judgement or pressure, but I'm trying to just let go & create.

I'm also finding that you have to make uninspired art sometimes if you want to be inspired. You have to get your brain in that headspace. You have to just make something, anything, that gets your mind engaged & curious.

@artemis I did a thing in 2022 where I challenged myself to make a 40 tracks in 1 week sprints (giving me one week a month off). I managed to hit my goal. The rules were:
1. I have to start fresh every week. I can use ideas I had in my head before then, but all playing and production work starts after Saturday 3PM.
2. ANYTHING I start, I must release by 3PM next Saturday. Now matter how bad. I can abandon the work and start over, but SOMETHING ships by Saturday 3PM.

3. Do this 40 times before the year ends.

The end result is, I learned to work more efficiently, I quit worrying about perfection and learned to let go and COMMIT to something.

I hit my goal. I didn't like everything, but I got enough that I liked that assuming I ever get my home studio back, I'm going to work on 7 or 8 of those tracks and make an honest-to-goodness album out of them.

@artemis Yeah. To me, the key to making good art is momentum. When I do it everyday, I don’t think about making it as much and just create. But when I don’t have a lot of time, I spend too much time thinking about what I should do and how much time it will take etc and momentum gets lost.

@artemis I do like fedi for getting to see photos/video/audio of people's arts and crafts projects. Or repairs. Even if they're new at it, especially if they're new at it. It's like sharing in joy.

I know it's hard to allow oneself to try, though. Still working on that myself.
