So as of yesterday I am retired, had a 37+ year career working in #NASA human spaceflight, Space Shuttle and then the #Orion spacecraft. I set my retirement date in the hope that the #Artemis 2 mission, Orion’s first crewed flight, would have completed by then but Feb launch was delayed and by “cosmic coincidence” Artemis 2 finally launched yesterday - my final day. Very proud of all my colleagues and all the hard work we’ve done to get to this point. Onward to the #moon - and beyond. Ad astra.
@Trilobyter Congratulations on both the retirement and all the achievements! What part of Artemis were you working on? My kid was an electrical test engineer on the Orion crew vehicle.
@Devils_Rancher thanks! I worked on Orion software, part of that was designing and testing models of the Orion components and systems and flight environment that comprise the full vehicle simulation used to develop and test the flight software in all the various test environments and laboratories, as well as used in the crew training simulators. Did your kid work in Houston or Denver (which is where most of the US part of Orion was developed)?
@Trilobyter Cool! So you set the stage for what Erin did- she worked at the cape (just moved to Littleton to make GPS) testing electrical components as they were installed on the crew module, so some portion of her time was spent working in the ship, but a lot of it was writing test procedures, staring at computers or waiting for them to run. 🙂
@Devils_Rancher ah yes I thought of that right after I posted, much of the testing on the actual vehicle hardware was done at the cape in the O&C during component installation & integration.
@Devils_Rancher please extend my congratulations to Erin on her work and contributions. As I’m sure you know, like all big NASA programs, Orion had a large and geographically spread out workforce but every single one of us did our part and can take much pride in our collective success.
@Trilobyter Yes, congratulations to all of the thousands of people who made this work! It has been quite a ride.
