The Don't Buy Shit Challenge

So, yesterday I wrote more about pens and how I keep buying them. I need to stop buying stuff, not just pens. I’ve tried to do the low-buy or no-buy challenges in the past, but I’ve failed every time. This time is going to be different. I hope, anyway. My goal is to go at least the next six months without buying anything I don’t absolutely need. And by absolutely need, I mean can’t live without: food, shelter, and such. Anything tech wise, pens, gaming, etc. needs to go into the “don’t buy” category. I have enough tech and such already, I don’t need anymore. Now, obviously if my computer dies, I’ll probaby have to break the challenge, though I do have other computers around so maybe not.

@thelinuxcast I’ve been doing the same. I self host Actual Budget for tracking, it’s YNABy if you’re into that sort of thing. https://actualbudget.org/

@thelinuxcast

It's worth buying something just for yourself from time to time.

I used to buy a gadget every two months that I could live without. But it's worth spending on something enjoyable.

I've been cutting back on my spending for a while now. But am I happy about it?

@thelinuxcast Good idea. I am also on this path. IMO not even just about money nor being a cheapskate either. Forming a lifelong habit of NOT engaging in "consumerism" - basically buying to manage emotions, and/or buying as a "religion" - will make the world a better place, as well as your own life and longterm mental health.

Additionally, when I buy something I consider how long it will last and how repairable it is. There is joy in simplicity and not craving stuff, by not feeding the habit.
