The Golden Lagoon (Isn’t As Good As I Remember)

Few things benefit from the fundamentally spongy form of human memory like nostalgia properties. Particularly, there’s this idea that the run of original Transformers episodes was a mix of extremely mediocre episodes with rare, surprisingly well-written stories that have something of them that stands out. One episode that I used to hold up as an example of this was The Golden Lagoon.

It's definitely an episode with an ending that does most of the heavy lifting in how its remembered.

Ruined meadow, battle-worn scene, Beachcomber solemn "We won.", with oddly triumphant music playing. So often the show celebrated every victorious skirmish, but for once it showed the collateral damage too.

Whether intentional or not, I'm sure it was many a kids' first impression of narrative irony.
