Day hanging out making at the studio of #ceramicist David Pottinger in #melbourne

He took me under his wing in 2017, when I decided to get into ceramics. I'd started taking wheel throwing classes, and just wanted to check out the space that he had, planning to sort myself out in a few months time.
I called during an Australian Ceramics open day, and whilst Elm St wasn't listed, figured they might be up for it.
I go in, have a quick chat, mention I'm just starting out at Slow Clay. (cont)

David was the Studio Manager of (now closed) Elm St Studios, which was a rabbit warren of spaces for ceramicists. After meeting him, he said, so...when are you moving in?
I was like - but I...I don't even have a wheel! You can borrow one of mine, he said. What about firing?
Several kilns, we'll sort something out...

It was incredible being there, and I had to learn fast in order to mix glazes, fire, etc. David and I used to hang out in the early hours, checking kilns, making in the quiet. ⬇️

He'd tell me about exhibitions, insisting that I go, which really opened my eyes re: what was going on in ceramics land, and I'm forever grateful for that.
Today, we had a great visitor - Stephen Benwell, who came in to glaze a pot and get it fired.
They're wonderful riotious beasts of color, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how the huge pot he bought in comes out, but here's a previous one:
I think it's low temp? Underglazes, his own clear glaze recipe.
