I am so f'ing sick of people saying, "Oh, I have allergies! Maybe it's the flu? Or just a cold? Could be RSV or strep..." and COMPLETELY omitting covid, as if it literally doesn't exist. RSV didn't used to be in the everyday vernacular of illnesses either, but somehow people now refer to it more commonly than covid?!?

And don't even get me started on those who only mention covid to say, "It's not covid" even though they didn't test or only tested once!!!

Of course it's not JUST covid out there & guess what? Masks work to prevent MANY illness, not just covid!!

My dad took a 1-week trip, came home sick, now recovering for 1.5 weeks & counting. Multiple home tests over 5 days all neg. for covid, flu A/B, RSV.

My kid stopped masking at school (high school senior, I have to choose my battles) & now he's sick with flu B.

At the VERY LEAST can't people mask when having symptoms so they don't spread what they have to others?!?!

@ikuo1000 I hear you! If they admit Covid is still out there, they might have to take action and wouldn't that be inconvenient.
They may have to find out the hard way when they catch one of those mystery illnesses that appear out of nowhere. /s

Hope your dad and kid recover without lasting issues.

@ConnyChiwa Thank you!!

And yeeess, that's it exactly. These people would rather ignore covid than face the inconvenience of dealing with covid - because they DO know it's serious enough to take precautions if covid ACTUALLY is present 🙄 - even if it means they'll end up getting covid themselves or passing it on to others!?!! It's a logic that makes no sense to me. 😠

@ikuo1000 @ConnyChiwa I am so sorry your dad got sick but glad he tested neg for the nasties. It is so unfortunate how the school system has just thrown their hands up in massive denial by not having policies for infectious disease transmission and mitigations. Our kids are our future, and the reinfections with covid (and influenza) can affect future health down the road. Not to mention loss of brain cells with covid! And increased dementia post covid and influenza! We need better leaders.
@ikuo1000 @ConnyChiwa Since omicron has been around and there are fewer hospitalizations and nobody hears much about covid deaths anymore, the issue lies in the increased long term risk of developing long covid (asymptomatic and organ dysfunction or symptomatic) the more reinfections occur in people's lifetime. PSAs need to focus on risk for long term health issues, even after a 'mild' covid infection. Immune dysfunction is one such sequela. People are generally sicker post covid infections.
@huskify @ikuo1000 💯! Public health messaging re prevention is near zero in Aotearoa (NZ). We have one lone epidemiologist who keeps beating the drum on this but that's basically it.
It makes me so sad for our younger generation.
@ConnyChiwa @ikuo1000 I guess at this point you have to be grateful for that one lone epidemiologist fighting the fight! NZ used to be a leader in public health when the pandemic started. Sad how it changed. Only a bunch of clowns, quacks and grifters heading our HHS/FDA/NIH in the US! Here the blue/Democratic states are better at PSAs than the red/Republican states. Unfortunately too politicized here.

@huskify @ikuo1000 The steep decline was very shocking for us Covid-conscious folks. Our current Minister of Health thinks Covid is just another infectious disease, no need for any preventative action. They don't collect official data on Long Covid diagnoses so all we have is self-reported numbers and they are alarming. Doesn't bother the govt though.

I really feel for you in the US. We watch in shock and horror from the other side of the world but it affects us too if research funding and disease monitoring is cut.
