This is actually what the zero covid community has been doing with respirator masks. You cannot avoid it as the path forward if actual prevention is the way through the whitewater. You can and should focus on indoor air quality. You can and should implement things like far-UVC (as long as you ventilate the ozone). But these are solutions to ambient aerosols, not the aerosols your coworker is breathing directly into your face. The short-range problem is only solvable by respirator use.
